MPC, Massachusetts Work Toward a New Hollywood
With sports dynasties like the Celtics, Red Sox and Patriots, it's a great time to be a sports fan in Massachusetts, but it's also a great time to be in film and video production too . . . could we be looking at yet another dynasty, perhaps?
The Massachusetts Production Coalition, formed to help grow the business of film, video and new media production in the state, went to work with the state legislature to help pass one of the most aggressive tax incentive plans in country.
Before this tax credit legislation went into effect, only five major films have done any shooting in Massachusetts in the last seven years. Despite some big films that were set here - A Perfect Storm, Fever Pitch, Mystic River, The Departed, among others - only a small fraction of their production budgets were actually being spent here. Since the production tax incentives package was passed in 2006, several major movies have already shot here and many more are lining up to come to Massachusetts - including 21, Scorcese's Shutter Island, Bachelor Number Two, The Proposal, Pink Panther Deux, The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Mall Cop, The Box, and The Women.
This legislation allows production houses to take a 25% credit on all in-state payroll and production expenses, as well as a full credit on all production-related state sales tax. For a summary of the tax incentives, click here.
